Favorite Toys for….Basic Concepts!

These toys are great options for targeting basic concepts including, COLORS, SHAPES, NUMBERS, PREPOSITIONS, FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS, CORE VERBS & NOUNS!

Additionally, these can grow with the child and be rotated in and out as they develop new skills! You may find that after it has been put away for a while, they interact with it differently!

  1. Toy Barns!

    • These are a HIT in our house!
    • They are brightly colored.
    • Have both a labeled number and dots to represent the number as well.
    • A good size for little hands.
    • The animals are hollow and can be used as finger puppets.
    • Great for prepositions like IN, OUT, ON, & OFF!
  2. Dinosaur Nesting Boxes!

    • These are WONDERFUL for more complex prepositions like BESIDE, INSIDE, OUTSIDE, BETWEEN, THROUGH, BEHIND, UNDER, & ON TOP.
    • ADJECTIVES! You can describe the houses and the dinosaurs.
    • Opposites: SMALL, BIG, ROUGH, SMOOTH, MEAN, NICE
    • Lots of colors!
    • And great for imaginary play!

    • Colors!
    • Core words: UP, DOWN, FLIP, TURN, CRASH, GO, STOP, FAST, SLOW
    • Counting
    • Turn taking language & practice (“blue cars turn, my turn, his, turn, her turn, their turn, it’s turn, red’s turn etc.”)
    • AND….THEY HAVE LITTLE GARAGES! Match the car to the garage and CLOSE the door! Such a great feature!

    • This incorporates fine motor ability which I LOVE!
    • The keys have to match the color-great feature!
    • It is interactive!
    • You still have your core words, shapes & prepositions.
    • You can put other things in the doors to incorporate new vocabulary!

    • This one is SO COOL!
    • Fine Motor!
    • You can put other objects inside that match the color!
    • It has more longevity.
    • Could be added to a sensory bin!
